On April 24 1993, the IRA detonated a bomb on Bishopsgate, killing one man, injuring many more, and devastating much of the surrounding financial district. Included in the destruction was the mediaeval church of St Ethelburga’s.
Bishop Richard Chartres famously stood in the rubble and had a vision of the building restored, not as a church but as a centre for reconciliation and peace. His vision became a symbol of hope. Many people contributed to the restoration project and to the launch of the charity.
Do drop in at lunchtime on April 24th to remember and reflect. You can explore the space, relax in our Bedouin tent, or enjoy a quiet moment in our courtyard garden.
Please consider making a donation to the work of St Ethelburga’s in honour of this anniversary. Every donation will go towards maintaining our historic building and to our peacemaking programmes. Thank you.
