Presence is a music and poetry open mic event where themes of home, belonging and community meet through the arts.  This is a place for all, whether you were born here or arrived yesterday; whether you are in the UK or somewhere else in the world, our Common Home – Welcome!

Each month we will explore different themes and for December this is ‘Candlelight’. Performers are welcome to respond to the theme or to share whatever is in their hearts.  Join us as a performer or come and listen as a member of the audience. The vibe is friendly, informal and inclusive.  Decorate your zoom room with candlelight! Put on the kettle or open a bottle and come join us online.

Performance start time (GMT): 6.30pm,  join Zoom anytime from 6.20pm for an Open Mic spot. You will be sent a zoom link during the afternoon before the event.

Featured artists:

Rakaya Esime Fetuga, poet

Rakaya is a poet, facilitator and events producer based in London. Her work joins conversations on overlapping identities, faith and culture firas self-afmation. Rakaya won the Roundhouse Poetry Slam 2018 and the Spread the Word Poetry Prize in 2017. As a current Roundhouse Resident Artist, Rakaya is developing her monodrama, ‘Unbraided’. Rakaya has been commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies with Vanity Fair, English Touring Theatre and Kyra TV and worked in collaboration with Apple as part of Made in LDN arts engagement programmes. An advocate for self-expression, Rakaya hosts an open mic at Rumi’s Cave in NW London and works with the Poetry Society to support other young writers nurture their talent.

 

Alastair Murray, musician and vocalist

Alastair is a guitarist singer songwriter living in East London. He busks and performs solo acoustic gigs regularly and also plays lead guitar with John McClean & the Clan, a South London based rockin’ gospel blues band. You can sample his work here and here.

 

 

Open Mic Hosts: 

Sophie Besse, playwright and founder of participatory theatre company PSYCHEdelight and Together Workshops, accompanied by Ibrahim Fanous, Sudanese musician and singer.

New to open mic? 

  • An Open Mic event is a live show – currently online – where members of the audience can perform.  You do not need to be a professional artist; you may be performing for the first time, or performing music and song from you own country and traditions.
  • At each event there are 10 Open Mic slots where artists can perform for 3-5mins
  • To perform in an Open Mic slot join the Zoom event link at 6.20pm and write your name in the Chat Box

Future events: From January 2021, Presence will be take place on the second and fourth Tuesday evening of the month, 6.30-8.00pm.  We look forward to sharing the space with you – online while we need to; in person at St Ethelburga’s Centre when we can.
