Join us for Noor's cooking class where you'll learn to prepare some aromatic dishes from Pakistan, followed by a sit-down dinner. We are delighted to be partnering with Migrateful, a cookery and language initiative where asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants teach their traditional cuisine.
Migrateful is a social enterprise that empowers and celebrates refugees and vulnerable migrants on their journey to integration by supporting them to run their own cookery classes. We are excited to be welcoming Migrateful chefs at St Ethelburga’s as part of our Refugee Allies project.
What better way than food to bring people together? This month come and learn the secrets to cooking a range of aromatic vegetarian Pakistani dishes, followed by a seat-down dinner with Noor. This is your chance to learn a brand new cuisine (or fine tune your repetoire), support an amazing cause, and eat great food!
“My name is Noor. I am from Lahore in Pakistan. I arrived to the UK 3 years ago and I am still waiting for my asylum claim to be accepted. Lahore is famous for its food – everyone is obsessed with it. You will find food at any time of day or night. There are so many different dishes! I love cooking. My mum always cooked us many different dishes when I was growing up. She let me cook for the family at weekends and that is how I learned how to cook. Pakistani dishes are known for having aromatic and sometimes spicy flavours. Brown cardamom, green cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, mace, and black pepper are the most commonly used spices in the making of a wide variety of dishes.”

During a Migrateful cookery classes you will work within your group to prepare dishes to be served family-style. Some dishes are prepared by the chef and demonstrated to you, while some dishes will have you preparing it from beginning to end while learning our chef’s authentic techniques from their home country. Our classes appeal to those interested in learning international recipes, practising a different language and in meeting new people for a cultural exchange in an intimate setting, as well as to those wishing to support migrants and refugees struggling to rebuild their lives.
The ticket price covers the cost of ingredients and a donation to support the innovative work of Migrateful. £35 + £2.90 booking fee sold by Migrateful through Eventbrite. Book soon to avoid disappointment!
If this class is fully booked – join us for the next one! Each month Migrateful chefs will be bringing their traditional cuisine and teaching a new class at St Ethelburga’s.
Migrateful helps refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants on their journey to employment and independence and promotes integration. It runs cookery classes led by migrant chefs struggling to integrate and access employment due to legal and linguistic barriers. The cookery classes provide ideal conditions not just for learning English and building confidence, but also for promoting contact and cultural exchange with the wider community.
St Ethelburga’s is a ‘maker of peace-makers’. We inspire and equip individuals and communities to contribute, in their own particular contexts, to activating a global culture of peace.
