We are looking forward to two events coming up in July which are part of 'My Neighbours Week'. The first is a Christian-Muslim discussion exploring what our faiths say about the rights and responsibilities of neighbours, and how we can be better neighbours to each other. The second is an interfaith walk taking in some of the history and places of worship in the East End, and highlighting how different diaspora communities have lived alongside each other. Both these events have emerged from a long-standing and creative relationship with East London Mosque.
My Neighbours Week is a programme created by the Islamic Forum of Europe, who of course have been the focus of much controversy. In agreeing to help shape and facilitate these two events, we are not endorsing all of IFE's philosophy or methods. We are simply interested in talking to people from different backgrounds, and particularly interested in convening conversations where there are significant differences in values present. We believe this is a worthwhile endeavour. And if we cannot have a conversation with a neighbouring place of worship about what it means to be neighbours, we are not fulfilling our function or our organisational mission.
