I'm currently convalescing after a serious neurological illness. I hope to be well enough to return to St Ethelburga's in January.
I was admitted to St Thomas's hospital on 25 July suffering from viral encephalitis, which causes the brain to swell and shut down. I was unconscious in intensive care for 35 days and there were some complications such as pneumonia and two seizures. I am told I came very close to death on at least two occasions, and in fact I had an “out of body experience” as well as some truly terrifying dreams. I was kept alive by machines and huge quantities of drugs. More than a hundred medical staff were involved in my care and treatment.
When I moved to an acute ward on 1 Sept, I faced a number of physical limitations. I was very unsteady on my feet, and my sense of balance was awry. I had lost the use of my hands and was unable to read and could not concentrate for more than a few minutes. My mind was very agitated and my memory played strange tricks. My hearing, never very good, had deteriorated further. The first couple of days were a bit grim but this was most likely fallout from the prodigious amount of drugs I had been given. However the speed at which I began to recover startled everyone, particularly me. Within a day I was able to walk short distances with a stick. My reading ability returned quickly and I regained the feeling in my left hand within a few days. After a particularly vivid dream of moving into a new house I experienced an astonishing sense of joy and peace which still persists.
I returned home on 9 September and my physical recovery has continued well. I am gradually regaining use of my right hand and am now confident about walking and managing stairs. After being bedridden for so long I am rather weak but have now got permission to go swimming which should get me fit in a few weeks.
Miraculously I seem to have avoided any significant brain damage. Mentally I am fully alert and my mind is very active if still a little chaotic. Cognitive therapy will help me deal with some issues of agitation, concentration, forgetfulness and confabulation (false memories), which are thankfully not severe. Physiotherapy is gradually restoring my motor skills.
The prognosis is good and after a few months of quiet convalescence, I should make a more or less full recovery. All in all I am in remarkable shape after such a dramatic episode. I feel very blessed and I am sure that this is not unconnected with the wonderful messages of support and prayers that so many people made on my behalf. Thank you.
Paul Wilson has taken over as interim Director of St Ethelburga's, and I hope you will give him and the staff team the same generous support you have given me in the past.
With best wishes
Simon

Best wishes for a speedy recovery
Dear Simon,
I have just read your account of your illness over the summer and I wanted to add my wishes for a speedy and complete recovery after such a distressing ordeal. As a big fan of St Ethelburga's, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your team for all the great things that go on there, and best wishes to Paul as interim director.

Dear Simon
Notwithstanding that I have only just heard your news we shall now keep you in our daily prayers at St Nicolas'. I had hoped that you would be able to join us for our Dedication Festival and lunch later this month, but obviously not this time.
May the Lord's blessings continue to be with you and bring further healing.

Simon - wishing you a full recovery
Simon - I was very touched to read about your experiences during and after your illness, particularly how your vivid dream brought you to a hopeful and happy place. I just want to send all good wishes for a full and peaceful recovery, and thank you and your staff for making St. Ethelburga's so special.

Dear Simon
I had no idea you had been through all this. It sounds like you have been to the very edge and back.
My first radio series for a national network was called just that - Back From The Edge. It was about people who had survived life-changing or traumatic experiences. If I were to revisit that theme you would be Programme No. 1!
When last we met it was to share a Friday lunch at The Buddhist centre in Kennington some months back. Little did we know then what a journey was ahead of you. Sending you the very best wishes for a complete recovery and very much looking forward to meeting again.

Simon, All good wishes from Christoph
Dear Simon,
well done again: in your always admired ways of caring about the whole world before yourself, you and the angels around you have apparently spared many of us friends most of the horrifying news, until you could turn it all into your message of faith and confidence in complete recovery and thus joy for all of us.
With all good wishes to you and Alison for that, yours Christoph

For Simon
Dear Simon
I had no idea you have been through such an ordeal which must have been so frightening, coming out of the blue and causing such severe mental disturbance as well as physical pain which you don't mention. I am sorry not to have written sooner but I was very ill myself for six months this year - and so never found out till now that you had suffered in this way. The lucidity and openness of your message conveys every confidence that you'll make a full recovery - albeit with a disturbing memory of this time. It gives us all hope that we can survive even the most ruthless of illnesses and retrieve something positive from such seering experience.
I wish you all the strength and support you need to help you through to complete recovery
Very best wishes
Jude (Rosen/Bloomfield)
