Sounds of Santoor

Friday 5 Mar  19.30

 

Transport yourself to the foothills of Himalayas with the shimmering sounds of the santoor. The santoor is an ancient instrument that's like the Indian version of the hammered dulcimer.The santoor is played by Harjinderpal Singh, one of Pandit Shiv Kumar's senior disciples. Accompanying, him on tabla is Manjeet Rasiya.

Delhi Dhaba Cooking Class with Pinky Lilani

Sat 6 Mar 12.00 - 14.00

Dhabas are the informal eating houses in Delhi where you'll find tandoors, great daal, delicious vegetable and rice dishes such as chana aloo (chickpeas and potatoes), tarka daal and pillau rice. Pinky Lilani, author of Spice Magic and a Sharwood's consultant, gives a demonstration of Dhaba cooking. And you will be able to sample the results afterwards, of course! 

The Debt Collector - Storytelling by Seema Anand

Seema Anand tells about how, according to Hindu belief, we must spend our lives paying off the debts of our previous life. And only once we have done our duty and repaid these debts can our souls enter the land of the dead. But when you arrive on earth you meet Kamdev, the God of Desire, who dares you to dream, who dares you to want, who dares you to stray... 

A Recital of Indian Classical Vocal Music

Elevate your spirits with wonderful evening of Indian classical music with Vijay Rajput, one of Britain's most talented Indian classical singers. Vijay Rajput is a maestro of the "khayal" from the north Indian tradition. He is accompanied by Shahbaz Hussain, a tabla player from the Delhi gharana or school of music.

Sikh Kirtan - Late NIght Meditative Music

Saturday 6 Mar 22.00 - midnight

Kirtan is the ancient call-and-response chanting performed in India's devotional traditions. The Sikh tradition goes back to its founder Guru Nanak from the early 1500s. Kirtan continues to be sung at Gurudwaras, Sikh places of worship, around the world. In this recital Bhai Rajvir Singh is accompanied on tabla by Surdarshan Singh.

The Baha'i Temple in Delhi

Baluji Shrivastav Presents Delhi 6

Delhi 6 is an area that can be compared to old Soho in London – a place where those at the margins of society congregate. This evening of music and song from the historic area of Delhi 6 is presented by Baluji Shrivastav. Baluji, one of India's great sitarists, spent some time as a youth living in Delhi 6.
